John Carroll was admitted to practice in 2012 and was called to the independent bar in 2026. Prior to that he was employed at the State Solicitor's Office for over 14 years, most recently as Senior Assistant State Counsel.


John's main practice area is employment / industrial law, however he has experience in a wide range of areas of civil litigation and regulatory prosecutions, including judicial review, administrative, constitutional law and all areas of government law, including freedom of information. John also has experience in liquor licensing, professional discipline, coronial inquiries and appeals. John has extensive trial and appellate experience and extensive experience acting for regulatory bodies, including the Registrar, Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission, State Industrial Inspectors and the Director for Liquor Licensing.


John has appeared in a wide range of courts and tribunals, including the High Court, Federal Court, Court of Appeal, Industrial Appeal Court, Supreme Court, District Court, State Administrative Tribunal, WA Industrial Relations Commission, Full Bench of the WAIRC, Industrial Magistrates Court, Magistrates Court, Coroner's Court and Liquor Commission.


John has a Bachelor of Science (Psychology), Juris Doctor (first class honours) and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice all from The Australian National University and a Bachelor Civil Law with distinction from Oxford University.
