John McKechnie AO retired as Corruption and Crime Commissioner on 30 June 2025 after 9 years. He was formerly a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia for 16 years after serving for 9 years as WA’s Director of Public Prosecutions. He maintains a strong interest in advocacy, having been course co–ordinator of advocacy programmes at university law schools for 38 years. For more than 20 years he has been a joint author of Criminal Law in Queensland and Western Australia, a leading textbook, now preparing for its eleventh edition. He is also the author of My Life in Crime – a tapestry of cases.

John McKechnie is a life member of the Law Society of Western Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.

Although retired from the practice of law, he maintains a strong interest in mentoring advocates to attain the high standards expected by the Judiciary.
